Committee Structure - About the Team

Beyond Compliance is supported by two committees:-

The Beyond Compliance Steering Committee

The Steering Committee has responsibility for determining the overall policy for the process and ensuring representatives of all the stakeholders involved.

The concept of “Beyond Compliance” was introduced by the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) with support from the Association of British Healthcare Industries (ABHI). The Steering Committee chairmanship and structure reflects its origins. Other stakeholders include patients, British Hip Society (BHS), British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK), National Joint Registry of England and Wales (NJR), notified bodies and the Department of Health, and since 2018, SCCL (Supply Chain Coordination Ltd.).

Anyone is free to approach the steering committee about any matters about which they may have concern. ABHI members on the steering committee will welcome the opportunity of representing non ABHI manufacturers who wish to bring an issue to the steering committee at any time.

The Chairman of the Steering committee is Mr. Peter Kay Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, National Clinical Director for MSK and Professor at Manchester University.

The Beyond Compliance Advisory Group

The Advisory Group was originally formed by members of the Orthopaedic Device Evaluation Panel (ODEP) Committee, with its role being:-

  • To offer advice to industry on a voluntary basis.
  • To act as an independent data monitoring committee for clinical follow-up data on new or modified products within the Beyond Compliance Service.

The Advisory Group reports to the Steering Committee.

Other Experts

From time to time it is also necessary to enlist the services of other experts (such as bioengineers, statisticians and toxicologists).

Recruitment

Over time, the Advisory Group has been expanded to include new members who are not members of ODEP. Further members may be recruited to the Advisory Group as required.
